What Is a Penile Prosthesis?

A penile prosthesis (penile implant) is a silicone implant surgically placed inside the penis to provide an erection in men who cannot achieve the erection required for sexual intercourse.

There are two types: malleable (one-piece) and inflatable (two- and three-piece). With malleable types, the patient straightens the penis during intercourse and bends it down to conceal it afterwards. With inflatable prostheses, the patient inflates and stiffens the penis before intercourse using a small pump placed next to the testicles, and deflates the prosthesis after intercourse to return it to its normal state.

Who Is It For?

It is a third-line treatment used when erectile dysfunction does not respond adequately to other treatments or when other methods cannot meet the patient's expectations

Is It Visible From the Outside?

The prosthesis is placed inside the tissues that produce erection (the cavernous bodies) and is not visible from the outside.

Are Semen Flow (Ejaculation), Sexual Pleasure and Orgasm Affected?

In patients with a penile implant, semen flow is not affected and they can father children naturally. Because sexual pleasure and ejaculation are not affected, orgasm continues in the same way after the procedure.

Does It Have a Limited Lifespan?

These are devices intended for lifelong use. However, in case of infection or mechanical failure, they may need to be removed or replaced.

What Is Its Advantage Over Other Methods?

The greatest advantage of this procedure is that patients will no longer experience erection problems in any way in their sexual life from then on, and their performance will continue in the same way into old age.
