Assoc. Prof. Dr. Miçooğulları said that benign prostatic hyperplasia can cause symptoms such as frequent urination, a split urine stream, interrupted urination, a feeling of incomplete bladder emptying, sometimes urinary incontinence, bleeding from the urinary tract and infections, and can sometimes lead to conditions as serious as kidney failure. Noting that the thulium fiber laser (TFL) is among the newest technologies used in urology, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Miçooğulları said that this new treatment method can be used in the treatment of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), kidney stones and bladder tumors.
HOW IT IS PERFORMED
Explaining that in ThuFLEP, the thulium fiber laser method, the urinary channel is entered through the external urethral opening as in other endoscopic techniques, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Miçooğulları said: “Depending on its size or shape, the prostate tissue is peeled away from its capsule in 1–3 pieces. It is then placed inside the bladder. The prostate tissue placed in the bladder is broken up with a device called a morcellator and removed from the body by suction.”
LESS IMPACT
Noting that laser enucleation surgery is the most current and popular surgical method for treating prostate enlargement in America and Europe, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Uygar Miçooğulları shared the following:
“This method offers features such as less bleeding, earlier catheter removal, a shorter hospital stay, applicability in large prostates, the possibility of pathological examination of the tissue, a faster return to daily life, safe use in people with heart and lung conditions, and, thanks to super-pulsed technology with its low tissue penetration depth, a low rate of nerve damage, so that erections are less affected.”
OPERATION TIME IS ALSO SHORTER
Stating that this technology is also very effective for urinary stones, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Uygar Miçooğulları said that with TFL even larger stones can be treated minimally invasively in a shorter time than with older-generation technologies. Assoc. Prof. Dr. Miçooğulları said: “In urinary stone surgery, TFL turns stones into dust with higher energy and efficiency. No significant thermal damage has been demonstrated. It allows stones to be broken safely while causing less harm to the surrounding tissues. With all these features, it shortens operation time and provides high stone-free rates after surgery. As a result, many patients can be cleared of all their stones in a single operation without needing a second one.”
